The Texas State Technical College System was created in 1965 by the 59th Texas State Legislature as the James Connally Technical Institute. Located on an abandoned Air Force Base in Waco, Texas, it was originally created to meet the changing workforce needs of business and industry. One year later, JCTI began offering hands-on training in metrology, chemical technology, and industrial design and drafting. In 1967, a second campus site was approved in Harlingen for the South Texas region. Over the course of twenty years, seven new campuses were created in Amarillo (1968), Sweetwater (1968), McAllen (1983), Abilene (1985), Breckenridge (1989), Brownwood (1991), and Marshall (1991). In 1991, Texas State Technical Institute was officially recognized as an institution of higher education and its name was changed to Texas State Technical College.
Currently Texas State Technical College System has eight locations (TSTC Amarillo merged with Amarillo College in 1995).

Founded in 1935, Kilgore College is a two-year institution offering both academic and occupational programs. Kilgore College is comprised of college transfer, occupational education, adult education, and continuing education students. It offers forty-six academic programs and more than forty occupational programs. Occupational courses of study are designed to meet the growing needs of the community. Students enrolled in Occupational Courses of Study may obtain either an associate’s degree or a certificate of completion.
Kilgore College also works to prepare high school students for changing workforce needs by offering a Tech –Prep program. The Tech-Prep program is a joint venture between secondary and post-secondary institutions and allows students to apply high school class work toward college curriculum requirements. Students enter the program their first year of high school and continue on through two years of college.

Jarvis Christian College is a 4-year traditional liberal arts college providing quality education in a Judeo-Christian atmosphere. In addition to the many degree offerings it has, Jarvis also has dual degree programs with other universities throughout the state including University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Tyler, and University of North Texas.

Wiley College was the first historically black college founded west of the Mississippi. In 1873, the college opened its doors to provide students with a broad liberal arts and career-oriented education set in traditional Christian values. Wiley awards two and four-year degrees in various subjects including business, computer science and mathematics.

Texas College is a private, historically black liberal arts institution focused mainly on providing educational opportunities, academic services, and career choices. Texas College offers 13 baccalaureate degree programs within three divisions. Majors may be declared in: Art, Biology, Business Administration, Computer Science, English, Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Political Science, Social Work and Sociology. Tyler Junior College was founded in 1926 as an institution designed to prepare its students for transfer to a 4-year university. TJC offers Associates degrees and Certificates in several fields of study including engineering, industrial technology, and information sciences.
- TJC was awarded two separate grants to help establish a Texas Center for Online Technology. The grants will help TJC to build on existing technology programs. The grants will also help with training for distance learning and information sharing technologies, development of courses to be delivered through distance learning, and a technology infrastructure upgrade.

Panola College is a two-year community institution offering technical and vocational programs, development and remedial courses, and continuing education courses. It offers a wide range of courses in fields of study such as nursing, science, and information technology. As part of its continuing education program, Panola College works with local businesses to serve their training needs.
- WorkKeys is a workplace skills system that enables employers to assess workers and customize training for a wide range of skilled jobs, provides a way for students and workers to document and advance their employability skills, and informs educators how to tailor instructional programs to help students acquire specific skills employers need.

Trinity Valley Community College
Trinity Valley Community College prepares students for additional studies by providing a two-year foundation. It offers Associates degrees and certificates and has programs designed for continuing education.
- For the past 6 years, TVCC has had the best graduation record of any other community college in Texas. TVCC currently ranks second.
- TVCC is a WorkKeys Service Center. It is licensed to provide job profiling, consulting, and WorkKeys assessment services throughout the TVCC Service Delivery Area.

Jacksonville College is a private non-denominational Christian college providing a student with the first two years of study. It offers Associates degrees, Junior College diplomas, and continuing education fields of study.
